McNeil Looks Ahead After Defeat

May 11, 2009 · San Antonio City Councilwoman Sheila McNeil suffered a difficult defeat in the Mayor’s race, but she heads back into private life proud of what she’s accomplished.

McNeil came in a disappointing fourth place – a full four percentage points behind her rival and fellow council member Diane Cibrian. But despite the defeat, McNeil – says she has do regrets and is looking forward to what’s next.

“Well, I’m going to get some rest first, because it’s been a very challenging time during the race, but I’m going to transition into private life – go to work – probably do some public affairs in the community and try to catch up,” said McNeil.

McNeil entered the race just before the filing deadline. She faced obstacles raising enough money to stay competitive with her opponents, and her campaign never gained the visibility necessary to win, but she says her supporters compelled her to run.

“It’s never too late to do the right thing. And I felt like it was the right thing to do because I’m a two term council member and have been on the front lines actively involved in all the issues in San Antonio. And had a list of accomplishments that I think that are pretty good. So I felt like I had a responsibility to offer that experience and knowledge to the city of San Antonio,” said McNeil.

McNeil represented district 2 on the city council for two terms. She says she currently has no plans to return to public life.
